University Admission Point Score (APS) Calculator
Your APS is the key to unlocking your university future. It’s the first thing universities look at to see if you qualify. Use our simple calculator below to find out your score, and then read the crucial information that follows.
How the APS is Calculated
Most South African universities use a standard 7-point scale to convert your National Senior Certificate (NSC) subject percentages into points. This calculator uses that common scale.
NSC Percentage (%) | APS Score (Points) | Achievement Level |
---|---|---|
80% – 100% | 7 | Outstanding |
70% – 79% | 6 | Meritorious |
60% – 69% | 5 | Substantial |
50% – 59% | 4 | Moderate |
40% – 49% | 3 | Adequate |
30% – 39% | 2 | Elementary |
0% – 29% | 1 | Not Achieved |

VERY IMPORTANT: Read This Before You Do Anything!
This calculator is a guide. Every university has its own rules. ALWAYS check the prospectus of the specific university and faculty you are applying to.
- Life Orientation (LO): Most universities do NOT count LO in the main APS score. This calculator shows you the points for LO but does NOT add it to the final total. Check your university’s specific rule.
- APS vs FPS vs M-Score: Some universities use different names (like UCT’s FPS or UJ’s M-Score), but the calculation is usually very similar.
- Minimums are Not Guarantees: Meeting the minimum APS for a course does not guarantee you a place. For competitive degrees like Medicine or Law, you often need to be well above the minimum score.
